TOP 3 HIKING TRAILS IN ISTRIA FOR NATURE LOVERS

Istria on Foot. A Slower, Better Way to Explore

One of the best ways to truly feel Istria is to walk it. Not just pass through, but connect to it step by step — through pine trees, rocky coves, dusty hill paths, and the smell of herbs in the air. These are three of our favorite hiking routes that combine scenery, peace, and a taste of the land.

1. 🌊 Kamenjak Peninsula [ Premantura ]

Location: South of Pula

Level: Easy | Distance: 5–7 km

This coastal trail winds through a protected nature reserve, offering hidden coves, pine forests, and sweeping sea views. It’s perfect for early morning or sunset hikes, especially in summer. We love ending this route with a local food and a refreshing swim.

In summer, a visit to the iconic Safari Bar is a must, its wild wooden structures and laid-back vibe perfectly match the untamed beauty of southern Istria. Swimming in the crystal-clear water, surrounded by rocks and shallow lagoons, is the ultimate reward.

During the rest of the year, this little slice of paradise is almost deserted, making it ideal for a deeper connection with nature. If one of Croatia’s famous winds blows through, Bura or Jugo, the experience becomes truly unforgettable. The dramatic skies and crashing waves offer a raw kind of beauty, and the wind seems to cleanse both body and mind.

2. 🏔️ Učka Nature Park – mt. Vojak

Location: Northern Istria

Level: Varies | Distance: 6–15 km depending on route

Want some elevation? This trail leads to Mount Vojak, the highest peak in Istria (1,401 m). The climb is gentle enough for beginners but rewarding for everyone. At the summit, you'll be greeted with breathtaking 360° views, stretching from the Adriatic Sea and Istrian hills all the way to the distant Alps on a clear day.

There are several possible ascent routes, and the difficulty varies depending on where you start.

  • The Poklon Pass route is the easiest and most beginner-friendly, with a gradual incline and well-marked paths.

  • For those seeking a challenge, starting from Medveja or Mošćenička Draga on the coast makes for a much longer and steeper ascent, both in elevation and distance.

The Medveja trail uniquely connects sea and mountain, making it one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to experience Učka, from the shoreline all the way to the clouds.

3. 💦 Seven Waterfalls Trail [Buzet]

Location: Northern Istria

Level: Moderate | Distance: ~14 km (loop)

Looking for a trail that combines water, forest, history, and a bit of adventure? The Seven Waterfalls Trail near Buzet offers just that. This circular route follows the course of the Mirna River, winding through lush greenery, crossing wooden bridges, and revealing a series of seven beautiful waterfalls, each with its own unique charm.

The path includes old mills, quiet forest sections, and rocky passages, offering a diverse hiking experience with plenty of photo-worthy moments. In spring and autumn, when the water levels are higher, the falls are especially dramatic. In summer, you might even be tempted to cool off in one of the natural pools.

The route is considered moderate, mainly due to its length and some rocky or slippery sections, but it's doable for most active hikers. Good footwear is essential.

If you’re starting from Buzet, the trail forms a full loop and brings you back into town, where you can reward yourself with local truffle dishes or craft beer from Bruman, the nearby microbreweries.
